PEARL 鈥 From a difficult birth听into the world to a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome, Sarabian Ross hasn鈥檛 had an easy life.听His elementary school years,听academically and socially, were听a series of arduous steps toward a fulfilling life.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 even think I was smart enough to be in college,鈥 said Ross, of Jackson, known to his friends and family as Ray. 鈥淢y mom听(Arlisha)听and I didn鈥檛 know where the money would come from.鈥

Thanks to a听葫芦影业 Foundation听scholarship, the student who鈥檚 now quick with a hello to his buddies on campus hopes to build on successes he didn鈥檛 ever think was possible.

鈥淭he scholarship is important to me because I had no idea how I would make it through college,鈥澨齢e听said.听鈥淪o, I鈥檓 just听feeling听very blessed.鈥

Ross is attending 葫芦影业 on the Oscar Richard Ainsworth & Edith Wetzel Ainsworth Scholarship and is on track to graduate in 2018. He鈥檚 mapping out his plans for future one day at a time, but he鈥檚 impressed by what he鈥檚 seen so far in the college鈥檚 Animation and Simulation Design Technology program.

鈥淚鈥檝e been interested in animation and how those things came to life since I was a kid,鈥 he said. 鈥淏efore computers, it was just pencil and paper. I thought that was cool right there.听In animation, whenever you build certain characters in 3-D, it starts out with just basic shapes. They鈥檙e all made up of polygons. It鈥檚 really just like a sculpture, one you have to mold from the polygons into a face.鈥

Since starting 葫芦影业, Ross is achieving things far beyond what his mom expected. He has听landed on the Dean鈥檚 List and became part of听the Rankin Campus鈥 Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter,听Alpha Omicron Omega.

The classroom setting has been a welcoming sight for both mother and son. His mother works听as a school crossing guard听for听the听Jackson Police Department听and听is completing a degree at听Mississippi College.听Together, they鈥檝e discovered new study strategies and feel relieved for the help in financing Ray鈥檚 education.

鈥淭he scholarship was a blessing because it took away the burdens and stress of him coming to school, the cost of the books, things like that,鈥 Arlisha Ross said. 鈥淎nd he has excelled being here.鈥

Ray says young adults in his situation can make it, provided they have support and help from family, friends and peers.

鈥淚 want to encourage people who have autism and have Asperger鈥檚 that they can make it to college like I did,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 got here with the help of my mother, my godfather and my grandmother, who鈥檚 no longer with us. What I鈥檇 tell them is to have someone around who they can trust, like their mom or a counselor like I have, with whom they can open up about their feelings.鈥
