Area of Study
The Elementary Education Area of Study provides courses that prepare you for transfer into any of the Mississippi accredited university options for educator preparatory programs. You will receive the general core requirements that prepare you to transition into university course work, clinical experiences, and research-based practices to be a highly qualified educator. Introductory courses in education will allow you to explore the teaching profession and the powerful impact of schooling as both a transmitter of culture and a powerful agent for change.

Overview

The Elementary Education Area of Study provides courses that prepare you for transfer into any of the Mississippi accredited university options for educator preparatory programs. You will receive the general core requirements that prepare you to transition into university course work, clinical experiences, and research-based practices to be a highly qualified educator. Introductory courses in education will allow you to explore the teaching profession and the powerful impact of schooling as both a transmitter of culture and a powerful agent for change.

Elementary education programs will fulfill requirements for K-6 licensure in the state of Mississippi. University programs will also offer supplemental endorsements for additional licensure in grades 7鈥8 and 7鈥12.

A traditional five-year educator license route in the state of Mississippi includes the following requirements: a Bachelor鈥檚 degree or higher in Teacher Education with documentation of completion of student teaching from an accredited institution of higher education; a twenty-one (21) ACT (or SAT equivalent) or achieve a qualifying passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators examination or minimum GPA of 3.0 on a minimum of 60-hours of course credit; and qualifying scores on the Praxis Subject Assessment and the Praxis: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT).
